Environmental Grants

An environmental grant is a valuable in helping you or your organization research and develop your ideas for helping the environment in your particular field of environmental issue. These grants help you in not only the research and development costs but also in the everyday running of your business or organization.

Many Environmental Grants programs are aimed at specific purposes for the betterment of the environment both locally and globally and may include such issues as rainwater saving, research, monitoring and reporting, coastland, bushland and wetland conservation, waterway and catchment management, wildlife rehabilitation, and preservation to name but a few. The government grant can only be used for a new program and cannot be used to benefit any existing project, nor cannot be used where your local, state or federal government is seen to be responsible for the project; this also includes projects started by school groups.

The fund can be used to help with administration costs such as electricity, gas, phone, photocopying and postage etc. but will depend on the size of the organization how much can be allotted for this. Newsletters that will reach the population at large, where it will educate and inform others of environmental issues may be funded but not those which are only sent to existing members. Other uses for this funding can be equipment such as developing educational material, maps and other publications, gardening equipment such as rakes hoes etc, rainwater saving and any other environment project worthy of consideration.

Naturally the amount of each grant will depend on who you are applying to for the grant, what it is to be used for and the size of your organization. When thinking about applying for a grant it is wise to look at your options and the different organizations offering grants as the criteria for each may be different. In general though you will find that most require a certain level of expertise in what you are intending, that your project will not need further funding and if it does the board will want proof that the ongoing funding is in place, many will require that you and/or your organization are a not for profit organization.

When applying for your grant you will have to write a Grants letter explaining why you want the grant, what you will be doing with the funds and the likely outcome of your project. They will want to see a detailed plan of action and a well defined budget. Case studies and examples will be expected, but once again is will be wise to check what will be necessary to apply and successfully obtain a grant.

In order to obtain all the information you need it would be wise to do an internet search of environmental grants and then select those that will help you most in your particular area. It may also be advisable to search for grant writing as the way your grants letter is worded may make all the difference in obtaining your grant.
